Honor Your Mother – How to Do Something Different this Mother’s Day

I grew up watching Cosby. I loved that show. I remember an episode when Cosby said, “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out.” That is so funny, yet true. If you are looking to win the FREE Baby Time Capsule, click on the link at the end of this blog.

Not everyone will have a Happy Mother’s Day, however you can give back to others in your community near you, to women who may be like a second mom. There is always someone who has influenced you in your life, in a positive way. Find that someone special, and at least say “Thank you.” I grew up taught to “honor your father and mother.”

Reasons to Honor your Mother now and into the future: (you may be able to relate to some of these)

 She definitely deserves the “Perfect Attendance” reward, some of us received in Elementary school. She was there 24/7, even when getting sick at 3:00am. What a trooper. She was always there.

 She helps make dreams come true. She helped with homework, (whether she understood it herself or not) so you can one day be the better person you are, in your dream job. She helped bake those brownies or cupcakes, to contribute to your Little League, to one day be the famous Baseball player. Her encouraging words never seemed to fade. She was always there.

 She was a great influence on shaping me to be who I am today. She was the one who taught me how to put on make-up and become a “real woman.” She was there helping me grow my self-esteem. She was always there.

 The days in her flower garden, were bonding times that are irreplaceable, as it has translated into many lessons now applied to my family, work, and daily life. She was always there.

 Our girl shopping days were a major event we always looked forward to. It is then, when I was educated how to look beautiful on a thrifty budget. Thank you mom, for helping me be “best dressed” in high-school to fit in, and never really letting us kids know how little money you and dad had. She was always there.

My mother has kept many sentimental things of mine, growing up. Was that for her benefit or mine? She has many of my scribbling; I mean works of art, as a child. She also still has my original baby blanket. What does your mother still have, from your childhood?

Something Different for Mother’s Day

So how do you honor your mother? Now, I want to let my mother keep something of mine, to honor her back. I want to do something different this Mother’s Day. I want to let her know I will always be there for her. I am promising that, by sending her a “Message to the Future” of how I will do that. You can do this in a video or written letter. I would be interesting to see how much you have changed from now, and, then later in the future, compared to the video or handwriting in your letter.

Having a difficult time picking out the perfect card, because your mother was the kind for who the entire greeting card aisle was written? Do something different, and make it a personal card, by writing her a “Message to the Future” letter of thanks and how you plan to take care of her into the future, not just on Mother’s Day. She deserves it. She was always there. Remember?

This is like that cute coupon book you made your mother or father, when you were young. (one free night of doing dishes, without pay or complaining, one free car wash, one free bed in breakfast – that was always interesting). It is an adult version of that coupon book, or promises of how you will continue to show love to her.

Mom -5

Dear Mom,

As we all grow into the future together, I wanted to first of all say “thank you.” Thank you for being you and all you have done for me in the past. Now, it is my turn to return the favor, and tell you how much you are loved, by letting you know what all I will be doing for you, in the future.

You were always there. You gave a live of parenthood to me. I now want to give you a life of servanthood, to pay it forward.

My serving heart will be done with a happy spirit in the future. Things may get hectic in life and work, but I will always be there for you. I will not lose the “me” in the “we,” as we go on this journey together. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for our relationship. It may profoundly change us, but I will make sure it is for the better, and not grow bitter over challenging times.

Whatever you choose to do, in the future, we will do it together. My promises:

• To be there for you, when you need help.

• I will help you fill out any boring paperwork in the future.

• I will help you make your dreams and wishes come true, fulfilling your bucket list.

• I will help you put your make up on (when necessary) and read encouraging books to you.

• I will be there continually as we both plant your favorite flowers.

• I will definitely be there for our shopping days. That one goes without saying.

• We will find a way to make things work, when life gets expensive in the future. You and dad taught us kids to be creative for a reason.

• We will bond even more, making daily life fun, as I help you do whatever you need (fold clothes, do dishes for you, wash your car, feed you if you have a difficult recovery from a future surgery, etc).

• I will chauffeur or drive you to wherever you want to go, as you did for me for 16 years.

• I will not quit fighting for your rights, when and if the needs arise. I will continue to make sure you are educated about your decisions, as much as you helped educate us in life.

• There is so much to look forward to. Most importantly, I will always be there.

You know your mother the best. What would you write to her in your “Message to the Future?” Your mother may not have done everything right, especially if you were her first born child (as I was), but she or someone special in your life has, and deserves a “Thank You.” I know my mom does, because at least she was always there.
