Lets have fun looking at these 10 fun nostalgic activities for your kids. In our last blog I gave you a challenge challenge on to you to turn off the TV for one night. Do fun things like they did in the past without a TV. Let’s discuss some nostalgic activities to do with your kids.

I hear it all the time. “The reason to have kids is so you can play with the toys yourself.” It brings back memories. challenge on to you. Turn off the TV for one night. Do fun things like they did in the past without a TV. To learn more ideas of things you can do, stay tuned in for out next blog.

1. Go outside and fly a kite. Make education more fun for your kids, by teaching them while they get to have fun at the same time.

2. Put on boots and jump in puddles. You can go way back in history and put bread sacks over your shoes with rubber bands to hold them on. Who remembers doing that? My grandma always saved old bread sacks just in case we wanted to go outside and did not have our boots with us.

3. Climb a tree. Remember when we used to see who could climb the highest in the tree? Spend time bonding with your child and make a homemade tree house. The tree house is where some of my brother’s best memories come from.

4. Skip stones across a pond. Again, it is a time to see how many skips your rock does. I still think my brother miscounted, even though he always won.

5. Have a picnic outside and make animals out of the clouds in the sky. This is a great activity to stretch your child’s imagination.

6. Sit back and just spend time listening to the rain under a tin roof. Teach your kids how you can tell how far away a thunderstorm is by the number of seconds between a lightening bolt and the thunder crack sound. It is approximate, but the number of seconds between the lightening bolt and thunder, equals how many miles away the storm is.

7. Visit a farm and see the animals. Take a horseback ride. Teach your kids not everything you eat comes from the grocery store.

8. Write a letter to yourself in the future. What do you think the world will look like 10, 20, or 50 years from now?

9. Get out your old toys as a kid and play with your child’s new toy dolls. It is like meshing two generations into one play family.

10. Make a time capsule together, preserving some of our child’s toys. You can also make a family time capsule together. Let each of your children throw in one special toy that they do not play with anymore but want to save. Pick out other items that represent your family.

Recall your old school life or childhood with your friends and siblings, as you play with your old toys of the past. Break out your Rubics cube. Call your friends over and tell them to bring some of their old toys. This could be one fun baby sitting hour with your children, while you go back in time playing with each other. Remember Teddy Ruxpin? What other stuffed bears were popular in your time? Have a Super Soaker squirt gun fight in your yard. You can still find some old Super Soakers on Ebay.

What was your favorite toy of the past? Compare your old baby doll to the newer technology dolls for your child today. I remember when Cabbage Patch kids were popular. Now there are baby dolls that talk, cry, and are very life like. What about the popular time of beanie babies? What is the most popular stuffed animal of today? I am sure it will be worth a fortune years in the future.

Save your old toys in a time capsule, to pass on to your children in the future. You never know how much of a collector’s item these toys will be in the future. You are preserving your child’s college fund when you put these items in a time capsule now. You can get your own DIY Time Capsule here, to get started today.

So go outside today. What old nostalgic activity would you like to do with your kid today? Comment below.

Do you ever wish you could freeze time? Let’s discuss the importance of preserving memories, as you may go out to eat with your family this week, or to a special event. What are you doing with your family and friends this week? Will you take your cell phones with you? What was life like before cell phones? You know there is a cost to popularity or fitting in. I heard someone the other day say, “who doesn’t have a cell phone now?”

You know we all used to do some pretty stupid things when we were young. Some of you may have wore bell bottom pants in the past. I wore them myself sometimes. I am not talking little, but big bell bottoms. Oh, they were ugly. Why did I wear them? They were popular. Why did so many of you buy pet rocks in the past. You know the rock you could name, pet it, and give it pet rock food and talk to it every day. It was stupid. People did it to be popular.

Are you more concerned about being popular than standing up for who you are uniquely made to be? Have a passion for the world and your family, but popularity gets in the way? Why do we long to be popular?

Why do we buy a Happy Meal? We want that toy. Then, we are happy. Although 15 minutes later the toy usually breaks. Then, what do you have to do? You have to go back to McDonalds and get another Happy Meal to be happy again. It changes our whole way of thinking from a young child ourselves. We learn to look for things to make us happy. We as adults have toys too, but they are more expensive. Most of the time, we are looking for toys thoughout life to make us continually happy. When that wears out, I will buy another toy, and then when that wears out, then I will buy another toy. Sadly we even take it into our relationships sometimes, treating people like play things or toys. When they do not make us happy, we will get another play thing or adopt another family.

Some of us are so protective of our possessions that we forget what is important. Possessions is not what it is all about. As long as you look for happiness you will never find it. Instead look for times to give to others, then you find happiness. There are many different ways to give back in life. Many of us become consumed with possessions that we consumerism and having the latest things.

What about the old things in life? What about the value of time together compared to the value of the latest cell phone? What is worth more to you? Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying things are not nice. I have lots of things. However it is amazing how we live in a society that pushes for us to have things, to pamper ourselves. It is amazing that no matter how many things you may have, you can still feel empty.

We here at The Original Time Capsule company value time. Time with your family, friends, elders, youth, co-workers, etc. Leadership and happiness is about going out and helping others. That is more valuable than the latest gizmo that says you are a popular leader in your pack. We either sacrifice our family to our passions, or we sacrifice our passions to our family. What are you willing to give up in order to spend more time with your family and make a difference in the world? Stop protecting your phone, and start protecting your family. Protect them by preserving memories with them. You never know what each day brings.

There is a point to all of this. Spend more time with your family. I am tired of going out to eat and seeing the whole family on their own cell phones, instead of spending the time together discussing their day at work or school. How do you bond with your family, if you are doing it with friends on your cell phone instead? How do you bond and learn to de-stress by talking things out with your family, when you are instead trying to play the latest game on your phone?

I was challenged this weekend and now I pass this challenge on to you. Turn off the TV for one night. Do fun things like they did in the past without a TV. To learn more ideas of things you can do, stay tuned in for out next blog. Ha Ha (“tune in”) Pun intended.

A time capsule is all about preserving time. Many times we want to freeze time. Many times we don’t know what we have until it is gone. Don’t wait until it is too late to bond with your children. Make your own Family Time Capsule today with our “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule.

Let us know that you too have learned the importance of preserving memories. What would you put in your time capsule to show how you spent your family time together? Comment below.

11 Ways to Go Back in Time

Have you ever wished you could turn the clock backwards and go back in time? What if you could relive that special birthday or first year of your baby’s life all over again? Would you do it if you had the chance? Let’s learn about different ways to go back in time.

You know if I could go back in time and do my English classes all over again, I would. Only this time I would enjoy writing because I would write about all kinds of things that I could save up as blogs to publish in the future (or now) when blogging is popular. It would be interesting to see how my blogs (or known as “essays” in the past) would have changed over time up until today. Then, if I knew in the past, that I could possibly be paid to write these blog posts, I would have been a very dedicated student and wouldn’t have complained as much about writing if I knew I could earn money for it.

What things would you have done differently, if you could go back in time?

It is a thought provoking question that we may or may not want to think about, let alone answer. Sometimes going back in time or history can help us realize how far we have come, what all we have accomplished, and just how thankful we should be.

List of Reasons Why to go Back in Time

It would be cool to meet ancestors or relatives we never had a chance to get to know. You could also go back in time to see your favorite pet.

Be able to start over in life and make a difference.

Be able to see your favorite old music group in concert.

You can fix old mistakes in your life if you go back in time.

It would be fun to play with old toys or games of the past.

You could pretend that your parent’s never got divorced, or any other bad thing that has happened today.

You could go back to dating again and think a little more clearly about who you wanted to marry.

You could go back in time and learn what life was like when your mom or dad was a kid.

You could meet historical characters of the past.

Go back in time to see what life was like when you were a baby.

I am sure there are many other reasons, but these are just a few to get you thinking. What would be your reason why you would want to go back in time? Share in the comments below.

List of Ways to go Back in Time

Through memory, you can return to your childhood or when you were younger. When did you first fall in love? You can reminisce with your memories just by using your five senses too. Just the smell of a specific perfume or cologne can bring back vivid memories.

Go to an old restaurant or building that has been up for years or even decades. Go to the museum and reminisce through history.

Listen to a record on a record player. It sounds so different, compared to music today, and will take you way back.

Go back in time and visit your old house you grew up in, or you can pull it up on Google maps and view it there.

You can turn back time on your computer and see what all you were working on in the past, by doing a system restore.

Think about how far you have come in life, by writing your updated resume. It is interesting to think about all your old jobs and how they have influenced you to this day.

Bring all your old social media memories back, years later using the Timehop app. It is a cool social time machine.

Pull out your old photo album and recollect all your old stories and memories.

Listen to old songs you loved as a teenager.

Play old childhood games.

Make a time capsule and collect all your sentimental mementos and memorabilia in. Then, years later open the time capsule and go back in time reminiscing about what life was like when you were born, married, or any other special milestone moment in your life. Use the “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule to create a time capsule for any subject you want. It could be for a graduation, your life, family, charity, business, birthday, etc. Get your DIY Time Capsule here.

So what ways do you take yourself back in time? Comment below.

12 Future Time Travel Questions

What was life like when you were born? Would you rather go forward or backward in time? Can time travel really even be done? As they always said in the good old day, “inquiring minds want to know.” Who remembers that saying? Let’s dive into these 12 future time travel questions.

Today we are discussing reasons why it would be interesting or a good thing to go forward in time.

1. To see if you get married or not. What happens in your marriage in the future? Should you stay with the guy you are currently with if you could see into the future what happens? How would you date differently today, if you knew what would happen in the future?

2. Would you have kids if you knew what you would be going through today with your kids? Would you have more or less kids? How would you have handled your job differently if you knew it was going to start interfere with the time you have available to spend with your kids?

3. Would you have tried to get a different job or continue to go to college to be able to get your dream job if you knew what would happen to you in the future? Would you have stepped down your role at your career?

4. What about kids in your neighborhood, school, church, or other social places that you could have mentored, but chose not to? What if you could see what happens to them in the future and how would that have changed your thoughts about mentoring?

5. Just like toothpaste will not go back into that tube, once you say words, good or bad, they cannot go back into your mouth as if they were never said. So, what words would you say differently if you could see into the future? Would you purposefully teach yourself to pause and think before you speak a little more?

6. If you could see when someone close to you was going to pass away, would you spend more time with them? Would you have deeper conversations about your life and memories, rather than what the weather is going to be like for the week? Would you plan to do more bonding activities, or take more vacations together? Would you reconnect with some old friends of the past? Would you ask for forgiveness or make amends sooner if you knew what was going to happen to you or them in the future?

7. What new things will be invented in the future? Would you start doing things differently with your photos, phone, or daily work or school life if you knew there would be better technology just around the corner in the future?

8. Would you start exercising and eating healthier more if you knew what you were going to look like in the future, 10, 30, or 50 years from now? Stop something bad before it happens.

9. What will medical technology look like in the future? Would it cure your disease? If you knew there would be a cure, would you worry less?

10. You could see where you are wasting time in your life, and devote it to different things. For example, would you read a book instead of watching a TV show every night before bed? Would you go out in public more instead of sleeping away your sorrows?

11. Would you have saved more money before you bought that car you just had to have? Would you have waited a couple of years before you bought your first home, if you could see in the future that it went into foreclosure?

12. You can see if you still need a cell phone or not? What will be the latest gadgets in the future? Will you be able to have a robot as a maid in your home? I know if I had that, I could get a lot more done.

We hope you had fun reflecting on these 12 future time travel questions. It may sound like a cool idea to be able to time travel to the future, but you would miss out on the excitement of things being surprises. It is like peeking to see what your Christmas present is, before you are suppose to open it. It takes away some of the fun in life. Of course it would be nice to go forward in time, but until that invention is made in the future, we have to accept that we cannot do that. You can however write a letter to your future self, today. You can write a “Message to the Future” letter in which you talk about where you see yourself in the future. You can answer all the questions listed above in this blog. You can predict what will happen to you in the future.

Put this letter in an “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule that you decorate yourself. You can paint on the outside of the time capsule, write on it, draw, or put any picture you want on it. Then, 10, 20, or 50 years from now, you can read this letter and see if your predictions came true. Get your DIY Time Capsule here, and start today.

So if you had to choose, would you go back in time or forward in time? Comment below.

Your Younger Self – Flying Delorean Questions

Have you ever written a message to your younger self? Who would have guessed 20, 50, or even 100 years ago that we would be putting people on Mars in the future to live? I certainly wouldn’t have. We will be reviewing possible flying Delorean qustions you can ask yourself or others about the future. We want to help you create thought provoking questions to answer and save in your own “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule.

Flying Delorean: For those of you who do now know, or did not grow up in the 80’s or 90’s. This movie is a classic. This movies will be talked about for decades. This movie is “Back to the Future.” Introducing the Flying Delorean time machine or time capsule.

Great School Project Idea – Make a Time Capsule

I remember sitting in high school many times asking the age old question, “How does this relate to what I am going to do in the future?” I am sure some of you can relate. What do you think would happen if you were asked in your History or English class, “If you could travel back in history, where would you go and why?”

You can buy an “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule and start answering your question today, filling out the “Message to the Future” stationary included. Put any photo of yourself on the outside of the time capsule. Decorate it on the outside of this tin, with other pictures of things that describe you, or draw and paint on the outside designing your own beautiful artwork. Inside the time capsule, save your favorite mementos and memorabilia that describes what life is like now.

So, If you could travel back in history, were would you go and why?

Favorite vacation you had as a kid

Favorite event you went to as a kid

Friend’s house

Relive a birthday party as someone’s home

A specific mundane day you remember vividly with your family or friends

etc.

This question can be answered as deep as someone wants to. Some people have grown up with their parents who have passed away at a young age. Some of us wonder why we are the way we are, and want to know more about our own parents and how they were raised to see the similarities. Some of us enjoy the more simple things in life, and would like to go back to a world without computers or cell phones.

Video of Message to the Future Advice

Have students fill out an essay answering this profound question. It is a Flying Delorean question. If you could go back in time, what would you tell yourself? Here is an encouraging video to watch for those who may be going to college soon. Learn from those in this video who have already written a “Message to the Future” message to their selves.

When thinking about the childhood, teenage, and past adult years, I would maybe tell myself:

It is ok to be different.

Connect with friends who actually have similar interests.

Surround yourself with others who are smarter than you. Learn from the wise.

Invest in your future, and read books that will help you move forward in life.

Stop following social expectations all the time. Be yourself.

Don’t wait until you get too stressed before you get help.

Remember high-school is not for forever.

It will get better.

Take care of yourself.

Live each day as if the last.

Plug in to a great mentor program.

Surround yourself with friends of similar faith.

Let go of power and outsource.

Stop fighting. Be the bigger person and accept constructive criticism. Do something about it. Don’t just sit there.

Set your goals and break them up in smaller chunks. Reward yourself along with way.

Give back and help others. It helps you be more thankful and grateful for things in your life.

etc.

Now, of course you cannot change the past, however you can learn from the past. Because you cannot change your past, you can also write a “Message to the Future” letter about what you would want to read or hear about, or view what you accomplished in life by the time you are 90 years old. Basically, it is like a bucket list question. For another great blog on this subject, check out How to Make a Bucket List for Your Time Capsule.

So, what would you tell your younger self? Comment below.

Refrigerator Memories – How your Fridge is a Time Capsule

What refrigerator memories do you have? What photos do you have on your refrigerator door? We seem to put our most meaningful and proud pictures on our refrigerator door. Ah the smell of fresh baked apple pie lingers in the house. “Mommy who is this?” Aniah points to a picture on the refrigerator. “That is your great grandmother who created this apple pie recipe and many others.”

What is on Your Refrigerator?

You can learn a lot about someone just by looking at their refrigerator, like how many kids someone has or what kinds of pets do they have. What does their daily schedule look like? I know our fridge has many different items on it like photos, favorite quotes, fun magnets, kids artwork, proud homework with a gold star on it, grocery list, to do list, etc. I am sure you can relate.

Your refrigerator is like a time capsule, inside and out. Think about it, what preserved photos do you have on your fridge? Your calendar tracks what you have done this past week, month, year. Save your calendar in an actual DIY Time Capsule, to open years later and reminisce about what you accomplished this year.

For some fun craft ideas:

Turn your old cd’s into magnets for your refrigerator. Go back in time every time you look at your old cd. I am sure you will start singing your favorite old songs too.

Reminisce by making macaroni art with your child to put on your refrigerator.

Make your own photo magnets by buying magnets sticker sheets from your local Walmart or office supply store.

Don’t just throw away that card you just received from a friend or family member, turn it into a magnet.

Your Refrigerator is a Timeline of your Life

On the inside of your Time Capsule, I mean Refrigerator; you may have leftovers from your grandmother’s favorite apple pie recipe. You may have the top layer of your leftover wedding cake you are saving to eat on your special anniversary. You may even need to clean out your refrigerator due to your moldy and aged leftovers in the back right corner of your fridge. Yuck.

Is it time to clean out your refrigerator? I do not like the thought of cleaning it out, but the other day I realized it is time. With all this snow this past Winter, you get closed in and eventually cabin fever. Winter is a time to get many things done, that I usually put off or do not have time to do during the Spring or Summer. I can always find more fun or interesting things to do when the weather is nice.

There are so many things about a refrigerator that can bring back memories, like the different flavor syrups that we used when we made our first snow cones together last Summer. What about the three quarters full bottle of balsamic vinegar from when you tried to make you first fancy recipe for your husband? That concoction did not turn out as good as the picture you saw on Pinterest. What about that homemade grape jelly stuck to the shelf, that you and the kids spent hours picking and mashing grapes together ,from the vineyard. Ah, memories.

Clean out Your Life – Create a New Time Capsule

You know our lives can be like our refrigerator. Every now and then we need to do some cleaning, removing old habits, or bitter thoughts of our past. A time capsule and cleaning out your refrigerator is a great way to reminisce, however remember it is all in the past. You can start today and create a clean, new life for yourself by reading motivational books, increasing your self-esteem, surrounding yourself with new and better friends, go on a diet and start exercising, etc. It would be interesting to start a new “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule to save different memories from this new clean journey in your life, then open the time capsule years later and see how far you have come.

Refrigerator styles have even changed a lot over the past years. I am so grateful to live today. If I was asked as a kid what do you think refrigerators will look like 20 or 30 years from now, I never would have guessed they would have TVs in them or computers, would you have guessed that? Our technology is so advanced now.

So what is in on the outside of your refrigerator? Comment below.

Let’s learn creative ways to turn trash to treasure. Please do not ever take a day for granted. I know this may seem like a strange way to start this blog, but I am having a moment thinking about my family and issues going on health wise. It can be hard to watch our loved ones before us go through tough times. I like to have things to look through to bring up the good memories with my loved ones. It is a great way to reminisce and be grateful for what you have and how far you have come in life.

So what does this have to do with turning trash into treasure. Sometimes you do not know what you have until it is gone. So, what are some creative ways to preserve heirlooms, which may seem like trash to others. Sometimes, what may look like trash to you has great meaning or a story to others.

Have you ever been to Goodwill or Salvation Army stores. There are many different things in those stores, that you may not have seen for years. To some, the trinkets you may find in these stores are long lost treasures, to others they are things that just take up space in your home, or trash.

Sometimes when you look at something, you may say just throw it away. However for many pollution conscience, or the crafty types, they may say keep it and make something out of it that you would want to keep. Turn your trash into treasure.

With the increased use of social media and the internet, there are plenty of websites to find different ways to turn trash into treasure. If you are like me and hooked on Pinterest, you are doomed to spend an entire day looking at ideas. Check out some of our favorite suggestions of creative ways to turn trash to treasure.

Found on blog.krysmelo.com

1. Preserve Old Jewelry

Instead of just giving away or throwing away your grandmother’s old jewelry, take a look at this creative idea. Put it in a picture frame to display on you wall. You could even add a remembrance quote below the jewelry that says something special about your grandmother when she wore her ring or necklace.

2. Preserve an Old Watch

Don’t throw away that old watch, save it and turn it into something more meaningful to wear like a decorative bracelet. Wear it as something that can be treasured forever and remind you of a loved one who is always with you. Take out the clock part of the watch, and insert a photo in the middle of your loved one.

3. Preserve Old Wood Pallets

Every now and then I see someone post a photo of how to use an old wood pallet in a creative way. I am a sucker for DIY crafts using pallets. Check out this creative idea. Use it to plant your herbs this Spring. What a great idea. Instead of just burning that wood pallet and making a bonfire, turn it into something usable.

4. Preserve Old Jars

Have you ever thought about the many different craft ideas you can do with old jars around your house? What if you used them as a conversation piece and put decorative ribbons, flowers, stones, or a candle in them? Check out another idea here. Each day your child, spouse, or yourself comes home from work, write on a small piece of paper a specific memory or thing that happened to you that day. Don’t forget to add the date. Then on New Years you can take the time to easily reflect on your year, by opening the jar and reading all of your comments. This is like a time capsule. If you want, you can also get an “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule here, and put pictures or artwork on the outside of the tin, then put in your notes throughout the year in it, to open at the end of the year. You can make a Family Time Capsule, Graduation Time Capsule, Memorial Time Capsule, Charity Time Capsule, or anything you want from the “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule.

Angie called our office to order a second baby time capsule. She and her husband were told almost 16 years ago they could not get pregnant. Three months later, they were pregnant. Angie is now pregnant with their second child. When their first daughter turns 16 in a few weeks, they will present her with the first time capsule. Three weeks after their first daughter’s birth, Angie’s grandfather passed away. Before he died, he wrote Angie’s first child a “Message to the Future” (TM) and placed it inside her time capsule. What a precious moment that will be when Angie’s daughter opens her time capsule and finds her great grandfather’s hand-written letter to her with a picture of him holding her in the hospital. Memories like this are the original legacy that we leave our customers. Each time capsule is original in of themselves, as they are personalized with love.

This story could be you too. Please do not wait until it is too late for your children to remember who their grandparents were, what their background was like, and the opportunity for them to relive what life was like when your grown child was a baby.

We are going to discuss how to put together a time capsule for you to store in a hidden closet or display in your home. We are not going to talk about a time capsule you bury. This is another subject, for a different blog for the future. Besides, if you have a time capsule in your home, you never have to worry about forgetting where you buried it. Also, when you move, you do not have to dig it up. Just take it with you where ever you go.

What you Need to Put Together a Time Capsule

Just like a recipe has ingredients there are a few things that can help you put together your own time capsule.

shoe box, cylinder container of some kind, or you can purchase an “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule here to easily and quickly get started.

Stationary paper and pen

Camera

Video recorder

Printer

Markers

Stickers

Pictures

Scrapbook embellishments or crafts

Popular toys

Newspaper

Magazines

TV guide

Current ads

Jewelry

Journal

Photographs

Souvenirs or other favorite things

Cards or Letters

Steps to Put Together a Time Capsule

1. Decorate the outside of your time capsule with anything you want. If you choose to purchase the “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule, you can use markers, stickers, or any artwork you want to print out on the included sticker sheets to wrap around the outside of your time capsule. You can even download your own photos from social media, phone, or computer and print them out on the sticker sheets included to wrap on the outside of your DIY Time Capsule.

2. Look around your house, your friend’s house, out in public, at your grandparents house, etc to find items that are sentimental and you want to save in your time capsule. Choose items that you think will preserve well. For example, do not keep food in your time capsule (yes, even a twinkie), because it will not last 10, 20, or 50 years from now.

3. Spend some time writing a “Message to the Future” letter to yourself about what you think you will be doing several years from now. How many kids do you think you will have? Will you get married? Where will you live? What will college life be like? Do you really think people will be living on Mars in the future? These are just some examples of questions to get you started.

4. Place all your meaningful items in the time capsule. You may even include an inventory list, explaining whey you put each item in your time capsule. Then seal up your time capsule using tape, stickers, or any other creative device you can think of.

5. Think of a date in the future when you want to open the time capsule? Write that date on the outside of your time capsule, or use the date stickers included in our time capsules at www.TimeCapsule.com to fill in the section of the lid to the time capsule, which says “Do Not Open Until …..” You fill in the date.

6. Pick a place to store you time capsule. Do you want it proudly displayed on your shelf in a room, showing off your beautiful artwork on the outside, or do you want it hidden in a closet so you forget about it? Either way, make sure you set a reminder on a calendar online, like a Google Calendar, to remind you when to open it in the future. You can even schedule a future email to be sent to you reminding you to open the time capsule.

7. Most importantly, have fun making your time capsule. This is a time of reflection and remembrance.

So, what would you put in your time capsule? Comment below.

Creative Ways to Teach Future Generations

Learn about creative ways to teach future generations about today. Have you ever thought about what the world will be like in the future. What are some creative ways to teach future generations about today? What are you doing today, that you may no longer be doing 20 or 30 years from now? Think about it. What are you holding in your hand right now? My guess is a cell phone, or you are are on a laptop. Will that exist in the future? What is your day job, and how do you think it will be different in the future? How will teaching or schools be educating students 10, 50, or 100 years from now?

There are already so many new technologies and opportunities to inspire, lead, shape, and help people discover how to make new connections, engage students, solve problems, and create fun learning environments redefining education and future careers, and changing the future.

I remember I could not wait for the bookmobile to come to our school. They always had the coolest books. Remember going to the library all the time just to get homework done. Now that is a thing of the past. There are now so many books online, free downloadable activity books, coloring pages, or other similar things I remember from the bookmobile. Also, the internet is flooded with information to help students get their homework done. I remember feeling like I could not survive as a child without a computer at home. Now students are assigned their own tablets for school in addition to books they may have to buy for classes, and that is for elementary schools. I am not even discussing college students.

1. Share Your Stories of Past with Your Children

It is so amazing how things change so fast. Many times we get so busy in our day to day, that we forget what we did yesterday. I am someone who firmly believes you can gain respect and help your kids be grateful for what they have, by teaching them what it was like when you were a kid. I remember hearing my parents start their stories, “When I was a kid….” Back in the past, I remember thinking, “oh boy here comes another childhood story.” Sometimes you do not realize how special your elders and mentors are until you leave their house, grow up, and/or have children of your own. Now, I know why they told me all those stories.

2. Message to the Future

Can you imagine if we could show our kids what their life would look like in the future, if they keep up their current habits and lifestyle. I am sure there are many nurses and doctors who wish they could get through to the children of today about how unhealthy some food are and could go on the rant about how we are super sizing our kids with food today. What about all the extra undue stress that the world is putting on our children too. Is there something you would like to say to your child about how to reduce stress now, so their lives will be better or less anxiety ridden in the future. If you could write a letter to them to read when they are a baby, and when they become a teenager, they get to read it, what would you say to them? Also, include words of encouragement, happy stories, and advice for other areas of life they may face in the future.

3. Make a Video about the World Today

Since everyone is using videos nowadays, why not make your own about what the world is like around us today. Include significant people in your life, in the video. Ask them different questions, interview style, about what they think the future will look like. I am sure it will be interesting for those of the future to watch the video again and see if any of your predictions came true. You could also create your own family blog and write about different current topics each day. It would be interesting to see how fast the trending topics change over the years, while reading the blogs in the future.

4. Make a Time Capsule

Preserve some of the most important items you think the future generations would appreciate in a time capsule. You can buy an “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule from www.TimeCapsule.com and design it however you want on the outside. It is a nice tin that you can draw on with markers, paint on, attach scrapbooking type embellishments on, ribbon, stickers, etc. The sky’s the limit. You can call the time capsule anything you want. For example, “My Life” Time Capsule. These time capsules are not meant to be buried, but instead to display on a shelf in a special room in your house as a reminder of your world today, to give to future generations or your own children in the future, for when they too ask, “what was it like when you were a kid?”

So what was life like when you were a child? Comment below.

Ways to Honor, Remember, and Celebrate Our Presidents

It is a day to honor, remember, and celebrate. It’s President’s Day. I am sure some of you are ready to go out shopping to get your great deals. President’s Day is also important to celebrate for other reasons. I know not everyone likes our current president. We are not here to get in a big debate about everything going right or wrong. No matter what, honestly, I cannot imagine the pressures of being the president. This President’s Day, we are going to focus on creative ways to honor, remember, and celebrate our presidents over time.

President’s Day is a perfect time to reflect on the past. History is important so that we do not make the same mistakes twice. We want to learn from those who have gone before us, from those who lead us, and from those who are making an impact in the world. I was one of those students who used to sit in my history classes, thinking, “when does this class end?” Now, as I am older, I have a deep respect for history and wish I payed attention more in class. Sometimes it can be helpful to find creative ways to make learning fun and memorable.

Time Capsules Teach

Have kids write what they think it would be like to be the president. Interview your own family members and ask them what they remember about the presidents when they grew up? How was the world different in the past, with those presidents. President’s Day is a time to reconnect and reminisce about the leaders who have changed this country. My parents always taught me the importance of honoring our leaders. One fun way to do that is through a time capsule.

A time capsule is all about reminiscing about our past. The time capsule could be used as a teaching tool for parents and teachers in school. Help the kids create a history timeline about the past presidents. For a creative example of this, check out this link.

Leaders Teach about Positive Traits

Leaders, like our presidents can teach us all about positive traits we should aspire to have. What better way to teach your kids about positive virtues and characteristic traits are important to have, to make an impact in this world or to better themselves in the future. As you teach about these important traits, you can help your child dress up like our great presidents in the past using old toilet paper rolls, seen in the picture above. Have fun bonding as a family, and teaching your child about history at the same time. What traits would you like to see in your child? Who in their lives are influencing them for the better? Teach your kids to constantly find friends and adult to be around who are wise, educated, positive influences, etc.

What to Make and Put in a President’s Day Time Capsule

Have kids answer questions about President’s Day on fun worksheets, or write an essay about what they think the President does all day. You could also have the kids talk about what they think the future world will look like, and how the President will run the country. Have the kids write a letter to the president. You may be surprised by some of the answers, depending on the age of the child. Can you imagine what the reaction of that child would be years in the future, when the President’s Day Time Capsule was opened by their elementary teacher, who then mailed their old essays to the adults 20 years later to read? It is amazing how different we think as children, compared to when we are adults. Save these fun letters, worksheets, essays, and kids crafts in the time capsule. Also save other mementos and memorabilia to open 20, 30, or 50 years later. It will be interesting to see which kids predictions come true about future presidents when the time capsule is opened in the future. Get your own “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule today to make your own President’s Day Time Capsule or a time capsule for any other topic or event you want.
