Let’s learn creative ways to turn trash to treasure. Please do not ever take a day for granted. I know this may seem like a strange way to start this blog, but I am having a moment thinking about my family and issues going on health wise. It can be hard to watch our loved ones before us go through tough times. I like to have things to look through to bring up the good memories with my loved ones. It is a great way to reminisce and be grateful for what you have and how far you have come in life.

So what does this have to do with turning trash into treasure. Sometimes you do not know what you have until it is gone. So, what are some creative ways to preserve heirlooms, which may seem like trash to others. Sometimes, what may look like trash to you has great meaning or a story to others.

Have you ever been to Goodwill or Salvation Army stores. There are many different things in those stores, that you may not have seen for years. To some, the trinkets you may find in these stores are long lost treasures, to others they are things that just take up space in your home, or trash.

Sometimes when you look at something, you may say just throw it away. However for many pollution conscience, or the crafty types, they may say keep it and make something out of it that you would want to keep. Turn your trash into treasure.

With the increased use of social media and the internet, there are plenty of websites to find different ways to turn trash into treasure. If you are like me and hooked on Pinterest, you are doomed to spend an entire day looking at ideas. Check out some of our favorite suggestions of creative ways to turn trash to treasure.

Found on blog.krysmelo.com

1. Preserve Old Jewelry

Instead of just giving away or throwing away your grandmother’s old jewelry, take a look at this creative idea. Put it in a picture frame to display on you wall. You could even add a remembrance quote below the jewelry that says something special about your grandmother when she wore her ring or necklace.

2. Preserve an Old Watch

Don’t throw away that old watch, save it and turn it into something more meaningful to wear like a decorative bracelet. Wear it as something that can be treasured forever and remind you of a loved one who is always with you. Take out the clock part of the watch, and insert a photo in the middle of your loved one.

3. Preserve Old Wood Pallets

Every now and then I see someone post a photo of how to use an old wood pallet in a creative way. I am a sucker for DIY crafts using pallets. Check out this creative idea. Use it to plant your herbs this Spring. What a great idea. Instead of just burning that wood pallet and making a bonfire, turn it into something usable.

4. Preserve Old Jars

Have you ever thought about the many different craft ideas you can do with old jars around your house? What if you used them as a conversation piece and put decorative ribbons, flowers, stones, or a candle in them? Check out another idea here. Each day your child, spouse, or yourself comes home from work, write on a small piece of paper a specific memory or thing that happened to you that day. Don’t forget to add the date. Then on New Years you can take the time to easily reflect on your year, by opening the jar and reading all of your comments. This is like a time capsule. If you want, you can also get an “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule here, and put pictures or artwork on the outside of the tin, then put in your notes throughout the year in it, to open at the end of the year. You can make a Family Time Capsule, Graduation Time Capsule, Memorial Time Capsule, Charity Time Capsule, or anything you want from the “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule.

Today is the day to get started and make trash more meaningful. You can even make your own crafts out of trash, and keep them in your time capsule. Show yourself how proud of yourself you were, years later, when you open your time capsule and see how you helped save the planet by turning trash into a treasured craft.

What trash have you turned into treasure? Share your ideas below.

We live in a world where anything is possible, good or bad. We never know from day to day what will happen in our lives. I was at a baby shower this past Saturday for my sister-in-law excited to be an aunt again. Then on the drive home, I passed a funeral home with a family saying their goodbye’s to someone they loved. Talk about going from one extreme of emotions to the next out of respect for someone’s loved one lost. Then, it had me thinking, we really never know when we will leave this earth after being born. How do we treasure and preserve our items to pass on to generations left? One great item to preserve is a baby hand print from the first year of our life.

Your hand is not just a hand. It is a physical representation of many things:

•	A hand is used for writing cards, love notes, stories, letters, essays, filling out paperwork for kids to go to school, or for work.
•	A hand is used to play beautiful music, play sports, or play the radio for some of us who are musically inclined (myself)
•	A hand is used to give someone a pat on the back, shake another person’s hand you just met at work, school, business seminar, a future mentor, etc.
•	A hand is a representation of many milestone moments in our lives, as we are born and first learn to grip things, first learn how to drive using our hands, get married and a ring is put on our hand, etc.
•	A hand is used to bake that traditional family recipe, every holiday.
•	A hand is used to accomplish tasks, save lives, build things, or make projects for work or home.
•	A hand is used to tell stories (as many of us talk with our hands – guilty).
•	A hand is used to help show love to others, or express other non-verbal communication. For some, who are deaf, they rely on others hands to communicate everything.

Introducing New Product: Baby’s Hand Print Kit

I am sure you can think of other important meanings or uses of the hand. So how do we save such a precious hand, before it grows up and journey’s through the many uses of it’s life? Save your baby’s hand print in a hand print kit from http://www.timecapsule.com/product/milestone-collection-babys-hand-print-kit/. Do not wait until it is too late, and your child is grown up, to wish you would have preserved their baby hand print. Get yours today.

Ask yourself, what’s most important to pass on to the next generation? Teach values to your children.

– Life lessons
– Teaching to help others
– Strong communication skills
– How to be emotionally strong
– Financial security
– Education
– Values
– Etc.

After being with my niece for a week, I realized she is in the independent stage, as she demands, “I can do it.” It is enlightening seeing a child without any fear. She is a real go-getter, a dare devil, and an observant learning sponge soaking up anything new around her. I realized while playing with my niece, how important it is to subtly drop hints to teach about values, and act as a consistent role model as she wanted to imitate many things I did last week. For example, when the dog got wet she shook, just like the dog. It was funny, but then I realized how much more important it is for my niece to imitate other important values, like family bonding.

My mom, niece (Skylar), and my brother.

Instill a Sense of Family History

Do not get so caught up in instilling values that you forget to enjoy the milestone moments, or memories. Share your family stories. These are what by nature, will share your values as a family too. A great way to do share your stories is by creating a time capsule together as a family. Save mementos and heirlooms in the time capsule. Save memories forever with a time capsule to pass on to future generations.

One Man’s Trash, is Another Man’s Treasure

I grew up learning the value of a dollar. My family shopped at stores like “Goodwill” in order to make ends meet. I am sure some of you can relate. Goodwill is a time capsule store in of itself. You never know what you will find there. To some, an old coffee cup may only be worth $1.00, but to others, it is may be sentimental and priceless, therefore it is treasured for years. My family had a dinner plate which said “You are Special Today.” It was great. My parents brought out the plate when we as kids accomplished something, received good grades, or helped someone else out. We valued this plate and how it made us feel. My parents valued what the plate taught us. It is a plate that will forever be treasured and passed on to our next generation of grand children, through a time capsule.

Passing on values to your children is so important. What do you value? Treasure these values in a time capsule, and make sure they get passed on to future generations. Pass on what makes your family unique. Embrace what life is teaching you now, and pass that on to your future children. Pass on your values you want to teach your own children, in a decorative Baby Time Capsule from http://www.timecapsule.com/product/babystimecapsule/.

What value or treasure would you like to put in a Baby Time Capsule to pass on to your future child? Comment below.

How to Preserve Family Stories and Values

You don’t know what you have until it is gone. Recently I attended a funeral of a friend’s mother. It is sad, that sometimes it takes the end of our lives, to help us put our lives in perspective now. How do you preserve those memories, that come flooding back to our minds, when we look at the faces or places, important in our lives? We have photos we can put in photo albums, giving us a sense of accomplishment. When your children grow up, you as a parent want to know that they are continuing to live out your family values. There are other tangible ways to accomplish this, besides a photo album. Create a digital scrapbook, or save your valuable emails back and forth with friends and family. You can also record audio stories to remember the actual excitement, fear, frustration, happiness, or other emotions during a special event or milestone moment. You can listen to the stories over and over whenever you want, even when your loved one has passed away.

However you choose to remember your memories, the important point is that you do not lose your stories or tangible objects that go with your special memories. Let’s learn more about how to preserve family stories and values. Save your mementos in a time capsule keepsake. These sentimental items will help with the details of your stories and will create a richer moment of celebration, years later when you open your time capsule to tell your grandchildren or special someone what that time in your life was like.

So, as you family gathers around for the next holiday or get-together, make sure you spend time recording those family stories being told. Gather one object, which has important meaning, from each family member, to put in a time capsule keepsake. Treasure your family values forever, for your future generations. Don’t forget to include a family tree in your time capsule.

Do not wait till later to gather your family history stories. It may be too late, as we all get older and forget things or these valuable stories.
