I have been looking for songs to walk down the aisle to at my wedding.  The first time I heard it I knew it was the one. I was working and it came on the radio. I was hooked to the words. Have you ever wished you could turn the clock backwards and go back in time? What if you could relive that special birthday or first year of your baby’s life all over again? Would you do it if you had the chance? Let’s learn about different ways to go back in time.

You know if I could go back in time and do my English classes all over again, I would. Only this time I would enjoy writing because I would write about all kinds of things that I could save up as blogs to publish in the future (or now) when blogging is popular. It would be interesting to see how my blogs (or known as “essays” in the past) would have changed over time up until today. Then, if I knew in the past, that I could possibly be paid to write these blog posts, I would have been a very dedicated student and wouldn’t have complained as much about writing if I knew I could earn money for it.

What things would you have done differently, if you could go back in time? 

It is a thought provoking question that we may or may not want to think about, let alone answer. Sometimes going back in time or history can help us realize how far we have come, what all we have accomplished, and just how thankful we should be.

What was life like when you were born? Would you rather go forward or backward in time? Can time travel really even be done? As they always said in the good old day, “inquiring minds want to know.” Who remembers that saying? Let’s dive into these 12 future time travel questions.

Today we are discussing reasons why it would be interesting or a good thing to go forward in time.

1. To see if you get married or not. What happens in your marriage in the future? Should you stay with the guy you are currently with if you could see into the future what happens? How would you date differently today, if you knew what would happen in the future?

2. Would you have kids if you knew what you would be going through today with your kids? Would you have more or less kids? How would you have handled your job differently if you knew it was going to start interfere with the time you have available to spend with your kids?

3. Would you have tried to get a different job or continue to go to college to be able to get your dream job if you knew what would happen to you in the future? Would you have stepped down your role at your career?

4. What about kids in your neighborhood, school, church, or other social places that you could have mentored, but chose not to? What if you could see what happens to them in the future and how would that have changed your thoughts about mentoring?

5. Just like toothpaste will not go back into that tube, once you say words, good or bad, they cannot go back into your mouth as if they were never said. So, what words would you say differently if you could see into the future? Would you purposefully teach yourself to pause and think before you speak a little more?

6. If you could see when someone close to you was going to pass away, would you spend more time with them? Would you have deeper conversations about your life and memories, rather than what the weather is going to be like for the week? Would you plan to do more bonding activities, or take more vacations together? Would you reconnect with some old friends of the past? Would you ask for forgiveness or make amends sooner if you knew what was going to happen to you or them in the future?

7. What new things will be invented in the future? Would you start doing things differently with your photos, phone, or daily work or school life if you knew there would be better technology just around the corner in the future?

8. Would you start exercising and eating healthier more if you knew what you were going to look like in the future, 10, 30, or 50 years from now? Stop something bad before it happens.

9. What will medical technology look like in the future? Would it cure your disease? If you knew there would be a cure, would you worry less?

10. You could see where you are wasting time in your life, and devote it to different things. For example, would you read a book instead of watching a TV show every night before bed? Would you go out in public more instead of sleeping away your sorrows?

11. Would you have saved more money before you bought that car you just had to have? Would you have waited a couple of years before you bought your first home, if you could see in the future that it went into foreclosure?

12. You can see if you still need a cell phone or not? What will be the latest gadgets in the future? Will you be able to have a robot as a maid in your home? I know if I had that, I could get a lot more done.

We hope you had fun reflecting on these 12 future time travel questions. It may sound like a cool idea to be able to time travel to the future, but you would miss out on the excitement of things being surprises. It is like peeking to see what your Christmas present is, before you are suppose to open it. It takes away some of the fun in life. Of course it would be nice to go forward in time, but until that invention is made in the future, we have to accept that we cannot do that. You can however write a letter to your future self, today. You can write a “Message to the Future” letter in which you talk about where you see yourself in the future. You can answer all the questions listed above in this blog. You can predict what will happen to you in the future.

Looking for creative ways to save college money for your baby. Congratulations on being a first time parent. I am sure there are many things going through your head right now. This is an exciting new time in your life. I know for many parents, as they have a new baby, one of the major things they try to take care of is starting a college savings fund. You may feel like your personal piggy bank account is anorexic after having your baby, however this is also a time to plan for the future life of your child. It seems like tuition rates increase about every year. When you start now, it makes it easier as your child is ready to go off to college.

1. Open a baby’s college savings fund, IRA, or Roth IRA

It is never to early to start saving money for your child’s college. You could even ask friends and family members to help get the savings started at your baby shower by donating to their college fund.

2. Save coupons

You would be surprised at how much money you save up over time, if you donate the amount you save from a coupon into their college fund.

3. Accept Hand Me Down items

Mothers love to help out other mothers. Accept hand me down items, like clothes, toys, walkers, strollers, etc and calculate how much you would have spent on each one. Then, put that money saved into the baby’s college savings account. It all adds up over time.

4. Find a friend or family member to babysit

I would love to just pick up my work and take it to my niece’s house to help my sister in law out financially. Not everyone can do this I know, however many times there is a family member or friend who may know of a friend (who charges cheap) to watch your baby while you are at work. It never hurts to look around and ask. Put the extra money you would be spending on a normal daycare or babysitter aside in your baby’s college fund.

5. Celebrate a Milestone event in your child’s life with a money card

When your baby grows up and has their birthdays, graduation, first communion, bar mitzah, gets straight A’s on their report card, or other milestone moment events, family and friends can send a card with money in it specifically donating to their college fund.

6. Save all change in a basket 

When you go somewhere to eat, get gas, or do anything try to pay with cash. When you get change back, throw it in a basket to go donate to your child’s college fund at the bank later. Again, change adds up fast.

7. Buy cloth diapers instead of disposable diapers

If you have to, have a diaper themed baby shower, and each guest to bring at least one cloth diaper. Reusing cloth diapers alone, will help the savings add up over time, which means more money in your baby’s college fund. When guests feel like they are buying the cloth diaper for a good cause and it is a part of your baby shower party fun, then they are more likely to do it and bring one.

8. Get a library card

When you go to your local library, many times there are many free books to read to your child, videos to watch, or CDs to help your baby go to sleep. All these will add up and save money to donate to your baby’s college fund instead. Many times your baby is so young that he or she will not even remember some of the books until he/she starts growing up. So save the money, and go to the library to get them.

9. Use Credit Cards wisely

There are credit cards and programs like Upromise or BabyMint, which help you save money for your baby’s college fund by donating a percentage of everyday purchases to your child’s savings account.

Great School Project Idea – Make a Time Capsule

I remember sitting in high school many times asking the age old question, “How does this relate to what I am going to do in the future?” I am sure some of you can relate. What do you think would happen if you were asked in your History or English class, “If you could travel back in history, where would you go and why?”

When thinking about the childhood, teenage, and past adult years, I would maybe tell myself:

• It is ok to be different.
• Connect with friends who actually have similar interests.
• Surround yourself with others who are smarter than you. Learn from the wise.
• Invest in your future, and read books that will help you move forward in life.
• Stop following social expectations all the time. Be yourself.
• Don’t wait until you get too stressed before you get help.
• Remember high-school is not for forever.
• It will get better.
• Take care of yourself.
• Live each day as if the last.
• Plug in to a great mentor program.
• Surround yourself with friends of similar faith.
• Let go of power and outsource.
• Stop fighting. Be the bigger person and accept constructive criticism. Do something about it. Don’t just sit there.
• Set your goals and break them up in smaller chunks. Reward yourself along with way.
• Give back and help others. It helps you be more thankful and grateful for things in your life.
• etc.

Now, of course you cannot change the past, however you can learn from the past. Because you cannot change your past, you can also write a “Message to the Future” letter about what you would want to read or hear about, or view what you accomplished in life by the time you are 90 years old. “Message to the Future”

Dear future child,

I want to name you Trinity. I am a woman who has made mistakes, but feels like I have also been taught to give my all in everything I do. I want to be able to pass that lesson in life on to you too. It is hard to do that when you have not gotten pregnant yet. It hurts, as we keep trying. I have seen years of great lessons my parents have taught my brothers and I and now I want to have a baby to pass on these lessons to you.

I am just writing and thinking out loud about all my thoughts in this moment, to let you know what life is like for me right now. Sometimes we get so busy in life that we do not stop to think about how today will affect our future. I know as my future child, I want you to understand what life is really like at this time in my life, so you know what to expect yourself. I do not want you to one day wonder what it was life for your mother when she was trying to get pregnant. I do not want you to not feel like you knew your real mother, even during her dull days of life. All days are important, because the boring times can even shape who you are by what you do in your spare time. Some lessons in life I would like to pass on to you are:

• Never take one day for granted. You never know what will happen from day to day in your life.
• Always keep learning and surround yourself by those who are wiser than you.
• Do not ever put anyone down. We are all humans and make mistakes. Instead, help someone who may be being bullied or struggling.
• Try to make learning fun, when you do not understand something. It helps you remember what you are learning, and encourages you to learn more.
• Do not ever give up. Nothing is accomplished by giving up on projects, school, work, or life.
• Spend more time with your family and friends, instead of worrying about “keeping up with the Joneses.”

• Help others in life. You grow more financially, mentally, and emotionally when you serve others and walk with integrity and empathy.
• Preserve your memories to pass on to your children and grandchildren. Find ways to keep your family traditions alive. That is what helps families continue to bond together, now matter how many generations apart.
• Do what you love. Be able to wake up each morning and say, “I cannot wait to go to work.” When you love what you do, it is not just a “job.”
• Keep like minded people around you to motivate, tell you the truth, and guide you to better your life.
• Whatever happens in the future social media wise, keep your nose clean. You never know who is watching. Not only are you representing yourself, but you are representing me and your dad as your family and how you were taught as well. Represent us all well.
• Treat yourself and your body with love. Take care of your own self-esteem. You can only keep giving to others, as long as you keep giving to yourself.
• Remember to keep a journal or blog for your future child. I could go on and on, but I will add more as I continue to get the strength to blog to you.

Sometimes it is hard to share your heart. Sometimes it is hard to keep giving of yourself when you do not feel you are being given back to. Sometimes you have to do things you do not want to do. Do everything with 110% effort. Live as if each day is your last.

Angie called our office to order a second baby time capsule. She and her husband were told almost 16 years ago they could not get pregnant. Three months later, they were pregnant. Angie is now pregnant with their second child. When their first daughter turns 16 in a few weeks, they will present her with the first time capsule. Three weeks after their first daughter’s birth, Angie’s grandfather passed away. Before he died, he wrote Angie’s first child a “Message to the Future” (TM) and placed it inside her time capsule. What a precious moment that will be when Angie’s daughter opens her time capsule and finds her great grandfather’s hand-written letter to her with a picture of him holding her in the hospital. Memories like this are the original legacy that we leave our customers. Each time capsule is original in of themselves, as they are personalized with love.

This story could be you too. Please do not wait until it is too late for your children to remember who their grandparents were, what their background was like, and the opportunity for them to relive what life was like when your grown child was a baby.

We are going to discuss how to put together a time capsule for you to store in a hidden closet or display in your home. We are not going to talk about a time capsule you bury. This is another subject, for a different blog for the future. Besides, if you have a time capsule in your home, you never have to worry about forgetting where you buried it. Also, when you move, you do not have to dig it up. Just take it with you where ever you go.

What you Need to Put Together a Time Capsule

Just like a recipe has ingredients there are a few things that can help you put together your own time capsule.

• Camera
• Video recorder
• Printer

• Souvenirs or other favorite things
• Cards or Letters

Steps to Put Together a Time Capsule

1. Decorate the outside of your time capsule with anything you want. If you choose to purchase the “Any Occasion” DIY Time Capsule, you can use markers, stickers, or any artwork you want to print out on the included sticker sheets to wrap around the outside of your time capsule. You can even download your own photos from social media, phone, or computer and print them out on the sticker sheets included to wrap on the outside of your DIY Time Capsule.

2. Look around your house, your friend’s house, out in public, at your grandparents house, etc to find items that are sentimental and you want to save in your time capsule. Choose items that you think will preserve well. For example, do not keep food in your time capsule (yes, even a twinkie), because it will not last 10, 20, or 50 years from now.

3. Spend some time writing a “Message to the Future” letter to yourself about what you think you will be doing several years from now. How many kids do you think you will have? Will you get married? Where will you live? What will college life be like? Do you really think people will be living on Mars in the future? These are just some examples of questions to get you started.

4. Place all your meaningful items in the time capsule. You may even include an inventory list, explaining whey you put each item in your time capsule. Then seal up your time capsule using tape, stickers, or any other creative device you can think of.

5. Think of a date in the future when you want to open the time capsule? Write that date on the outside of your time capsule, or use the date stickers included in our time capsules at www.TimeCapsule.com to fill in the section of the lid to the time capsule, which says “Do Not Open Until …..” You fill in the date.

6. Pick a place to store you time capsule. Do you want it proudly displayed on your shelf in a room, showing off your beautiful artwork on the outside, or do you want it hidden in a closet so you forget about it? Either way, make sure you set a reminder on a calendar online, like a Google Calendar, to remind you when to open it in the future. You can even schedule a future email to be sent to you reminding you to open the time capsule.

7. Most importantly, have fun making your time capsule. This is a time of reflection and remembrance.
